Antibacterial effect and adsorption inhibition of oral streptococci to saliva-coated hydroxyapatite beads with Akebia quinata extract

Abstract
The inhibition of the adsorption of tariogenic bacteria to the acquired pellicle would be an attractive strategy for preventing their colonization and reducing the progression of dental caries. In this study, we examined the effect of Akebia quinata extract on the growth ability and adsorption of oral streptococci to saliva-coated hydroxyapatite beads in vitro. The obtained results were as follows.

1. The growth of Streptococcus rattus KCTC 3294, S. sobrinus OMZ65 KCTC 3307, S. sobrinus SL-1 KCTC 3308 and¢¥ S. mitis KCTC 3217 were inhibited about 50% by 1% extracts of Akebia quinata. The growth of S. gordonii KCTC 3286 was almost inhibited, but that of S mutans KCTC 3065 strains was little.

2. The effect of Akebia quinata extracts on the adherences to saliva-coated hydroxyapatite was evaluated. The reduction rate of adsorption to S-HA beads of S. sanguis KCTC 3284 was 92%, that of adsorption in S. gordonii KCTC 3286 was 76%, that of S sobrinus SL-1 KCTC 3308 was 53%, but that of S. cricetus KCTC 3292 was not detectable.
